jmtorres: (story of my life)
You may or may not have noticed, I've been posting to dw a lot less lately. I'm probably not going to go back to posting daily grumbles and random thoughts to dw, and if that was something you were interested in, or if we're friends enough that you'd want to keep up with me day-to-day, a lot of that kind of stuff is getting dumped into [twitter.com profile] decontextual now. At first it was just going to be a "random shit people say" amusement ground, which is why it got named Out of Context Theatre, but then I started following some fannish accounts and I got weirdly social what the hell ever: I'm [twitter.com profile] decontextual on twitter. Over here on dreamwidth I will probably be posting more essay-like content, things that have been percolating a while, as well as fanfiction and vids. If I ever finish any ever again.

Right, so that was online housekeeping. Moving on. Disjointed thoughts to follow.

Working was fucking nuts (redacted)

On Thursday I am flying out for the long weekend to see [personal profile] echan and [personal profile] jetpack_monkey (and [livejournal.com profile] diannelamerc and [livejournal.com profile] lizbetann). If there is anyone in the LA area who would like to meet up with me and/or them while I'm visiting, HOLLA.

I have this I don't even know, it might actually be a disorder, but apparently I am more likely to feel things are right with the world if I move all my crap around every year or so (if I'm not actually moving from one house to another). At present I'm considering essentially switching the TV/guest room and my bedroom--because my bedroom is bigger, and I want to turn the TV room into the VIDDING ROOM, and have my desk and vidding computer in there as well as the fiendishly clever ikea sofa bed the TV. While it would make it difficult to vid from bed, it would make vidding a) potentially more social, as covidders could hang out and clip from DVD or betas could hang out and watch random crap until needed but, like, in the same room and b) more likely to happen from some members of the House of Torres who don't like climbing over my endless piles of laundry to get to my vidding computer.

I measured everything and found a decent free designer online, floorplanner.com, and then took some screenshots:

probably only interesting to people who will actually spend time in my house )

My to-do list is full of boring, grown-up things like endless piles of laundry and car maintenance and shoes. My plotbunny list lately is all:

--Harry Dresden is Not a Lesbian (Harry always-a-woman AU, spoiler cutting here for echan, who's only read to like book 2? but this should be safe for ysobel, who said she's up to book 4 ))
--WHERE ARE ALL MY PEPPERBOT NOTES, DAMN IT THIS NEEDS MORE PLOT, hahaha Steve is all "cool! the future is awesome! who else is a robot?"
--These Mistress Pepper notes are surprisingly complete, hahaha Steve is SO confused by them switching between Mr. Stark and Miss Potts and Tony and Pepper, because it's a scene/not scene thing that they're not copping to
--somewhere in the corner, Ivan is hiding from me all smug. I'll get you, my pretty.

This is the vid by which [personal profile] grey_bard convinced me to watch Primeval. It is all about Helen Cutter, who I have been informed is less a main character and more an agent provocateur, but she is my favorite, and this vid is all about why she is awesome. This vid is her going, "Dinosaurs? Or relationship drama? Hmmmm, I'll take... rela--just kidding. DINOSAURS!" I think I might pick dinosaurs too. Honestly.

Go watch!

*I don't have a Primeval icon so this one features the wrong Helen. Rest assured, all Helens are awesome.

...in excruciating detail.

So, due to I don't even know what somehow I lost both the physical spare copies and the master files for the House of Torres: Vol. I DVD (note to self: I always forget which horrible pun it was, Vol. II will be Team Free Wool and feature [personal profile] ysobel's sketches as disc art). Anyway, when we went out to visit [personal profile] jetpack_monkey and [personal profile] echan I ripped a copy of their disc, which all our computers said was CORRUPTED, so I couldn't conveniently rip a disc image, I had to use MactheRipper and now I have a load of .vob files and I'm wondering how I can make it an .img again for ease of burnilating. You know, after I finish figuring out what was corrupted and fix it.

Okay? Okay. So I'm watching all the vid files trying to figure out where the corruption is (did it take bribes? sexual favors? maybe it stuffed ballot boxes?) and jfc this disc contains VIDS I MADE A FULL DECADE AGO.

I CANNOT EVEN.

I NEED SOMEONE ELSE TO WATCH THIS SHIT, I CANNOT WATCH MY OWN VIDS.

I keep pausing and flailing in IM. [personal profile] grey_bard suggested I watch with the sound off, but I'm afraid I'll miss a glitch if I do. Like, mpeg2, video and audio are muxed, right, so if there's an audio glitch there WILL be a video glitch too--but if it's in a sweet spot visually I might not see it. We are talking decade old vids, I don't actually have the timeline memorized anymore.

My current complaint is: DEAR GOD, DID I REALLY SLOW DOWN THAT MANY SHOTS? Answer: probably.

[personal profile] grey_bard says I've grown as a vidder.

ETA: Suddenly I feel really old as a fangirl.

ETA2: Oooh, it might be the menu. That would *suck.*

ETA3: oh my jesus fuck, the fucking six minute vid I made. NOT remastered. I'm trying to figure out if I would ever, ever, in a million fuckin years, have the cope to remaster that.

ETA4: Early examples of vidding other people's vids. That shot will always be "Did they tell you it was set in stone?" for me.

ETA5: Did I say six? I meant seven. jfc, and why do I want to do that ever again? BUT I DO. I HAVE BUNNY THAT LONG.

ETA6: GOTCHA. It's in American Tune. If not also elsewhere. Continuing to check.

ETA7: Hahaha I am reminded that I was being a BITTER little liberal, vidding that arc to "American Tune" during the Bush administration. Which frankly make my insinuations about the corruption of the DVD more hilarious.

ETA8: Wow, I am STILL annoyed at a match cut I lost in a vid crash and never managed to fix right on the Fight Club vid.

ETA9: Okay, yes, [personal profile] keelieinblack, NOW I can admit the empty window is hilarious.

Hey, does anyone else vid from bed? I just moved my desk over expressly for that purpose--possibly this is a function of me and deadlines and "I can keep working if I don't have to be upright for it." But bafflement has been offered by two of my hausmates, so I'm wondering, am I completely atypical?

So "Title of the Song" has long been on my list of "I would totally vid that if I could figure out how."

I just vid bunnied Glee. As a marriage of the musical numbers and the ridiculous soap opera drama.

Clearly an ensemble piece.

Stuff other than Final Cut and Quicktime I use in the course of vidding on my mac (and forget the names of between vids sometimes)

(most of these do way more than I do with it, yay multitools)

--MacTheRipper, for directly-off-the-dvd-minus-DRM rips (as opposed to transcodes)
--MPEGStreamClip--multipurpose, the two big things I do with it are fix broken timecode on DVD rip files (this is another form of DRM) and switch containers on final files for the interwebs (the free/trial DivX codec I use in Quicktime for my interwebs encodes pops out a .divx file, but I prefer to put that data in a .avi container, because that's like, fandom standard)
--xACT--converts .flac files to .aiffs or .wavs, which are more Final Cut friendly

And then of course codec packs so Quicktime and therefore Final Cut will read .avi episode files the internet provides (and if I didn't have that particular neead I would just watch everything in VLC):
--Perian (if you use mac's ichat videochat Perian interferes with it, but other than that is brilliant)
--DivX for making fandom-friendly interwebs final vid files (from Quicktime, because for some reason it doesn't play nice directly with Final Cut, even though in theory Final Cut is built on and has all the capabilities of Quicktime)

I am probably forgetting some things I use. There's something I don't need every time, like FFMpegX was the app we used to get a semi-useable file out of a very old realmedia file for remaster last year (and [personal profile] echan, if MpegStreamClip doesn't do what you want to your .flvs, you might try FFMpegX).

I have been burning the candle at both ends, hit the ground running at six thirty in the morning, never off work on time because it's goddamn rush season, all week long. And it's only Wednesday Thursday, and my classes start tomorrow some four hours after I have to get up, and next week I am working until 9 every night per schedule.

I keep thinking of entries I want to write and never being at a computer to write them. I want to write vidding meta. There was a entry in my head today about how vidders (ones I know anyway) choose songs, and how some songs are obvious to everyone and some are only obvious in retrospect once the brilliant vid is made. And I keep thinking about writing up some really basic Final Cut stuff, because things like markers OMG SO USEFUL yet news to some friends.

Anyway, since I am failing at getting those entries started on my own, I would like to put it out there, is there any part of vidding as a process or my vids in particular that you would like me to talk about? I am now taking questions from the audience. [personal profile] seperis, I am looking at you.

My brother's SGU vid to "Cabin Fever" from Muppet Treasure Island

The Red Dwarf vid [personal profile] traykor and I are making to "Never Set the Cat on Fire"

[personal profile] jetpack_monkey's plan to vid Farscape to Alice's Restaurant OH MY GOD every time I think I've found the most hilarious line in this concept ("Just sittin' there on the group W bench") I think of another one ("And there, at the bottom of the cliff, was ANOTHER PILE OF GARBAGE!"). He hadn't heard of the revisited version and I don't know what you could do with the 18 minute gap story but I am cracking up at the mental visuals of Farscape to "I looked deep into the man's soul and I said, Chiiiiiip, was it open?"

Um so. Happy fun times crack vids in Julstown.

I am going to be brave enough to put this list out here publicly, because as much as I might irrationally fear it, no one's going to poach my vid ideas, for two reasons: vidders all have more ideas of their own than they will ever have time to make (I know I do), and no one can make the vid I would make, because I am unique (just like everyone else).

Vids that live in my head:

Being Human - Season of Illusions by Ladytron (the abusive boyfriend vid)
Big Wolf on Campus - Scott Bakula by Sunspot (the Merton's gay dilemma vid)
Enterprise - Mrs. Robinson by The Lemonheads (the trashy holonovel vid)
Merlin - Falcon in the Dive (the [personal profile] ysobel is going to vid with me damn it vid)
Meta - Tradition (the two finger salute vid)
Multifandom - Beautiful Things by Bobby Darin (the OOH SHINY heist tribute)
Multifandom - Woodstock by Joni Mitchell (the escaping dystopia vid)
Multifandom - various (the Badfic vid)
Red Dwarf - Never Set the Cat on Fire by Frank Hayes (the co-vid with [personal profile] traykor)
Sherlock Holmes - Bad Romance by Lady Gaga (the objectifying the masculine vid)
Supernatural - Please Don't Leave Me by Pink (the candy tears vid)
Supernatural - Come Out and Play by The Offspring (the thesis on season 4 vid)
Supernatural (ish) - Panic Switch by Silversun Pickups (Janie's vid)
Supernatural (ish) - Dark Eyes (the history of Ruby vid)
Supernatural (ish) - Turning the Page by, probably, Metallica (the fixing your con vid)
Tru Calling - Madeleine by Jonathan Coulton (the I had to watch it, I have to mock it vid)
White Collar - The Distance by Cake (the Kate as quest object vid)
White Collar - Pisco Bandito by Moxy Früvous (the everyone needs a themesong vid)

This is not all-inclusive, though I am a little startled at some of the older projects that sat up and said HEY when I was making this list.

*ponders list* Three vids primarily about heterosexual relationships (all negative!, in different ways), three vids primarily about homosexual relationships (hmm, more ambiguous), three vids that are essentially male character studies (ranging), three vids that are essentially female character studies (all sympathetic), three vids that are primarily about social issues before any specific fannish content, three vids that my brain files as crack (instead of in any of the preceding categories).

Hmm.

Anyone wanna talk vids with me?

Last night (what, three weeks after the fact?) I figured out how to make niq's cut of the vid work marvelously. It would have required changing more of the verse even than she did.

I am currently gnawing on a subjective reality problem. It's actually a dual subjective reality problem with elements informed by a cultural narrative of heteronormative sexism, which makes it difficult to bring up without sounding accusatory in the face of genuinely good intentions. Also I am arguably not awake enough yet to be coherent.

Slept a lot. Agreed to clip for the Many Break-ups: Candy Tears vid with [personal profile] niqaeli this week. Got nearly halfway into Good Omens and was confused by how many characters other than Crowley and Aziraphale there were (seriously, I had somehow managed to convince myself it was a fanfic style epic romance with plot as a backdrop). Was first useless as a beta and then worse than useless (I told [personal profile] echan her vid had a pedophile in it). Read [personal profile] echan some fanfiction, including the one where Sam offers to pop Cas's cherry and makes Dean help him pick lube and condoms until Dean explodes, and the one where Cas has to take a temporary host and Chuck tells Cas that Dean will laugh his ass off.

I should go to bed soon. I'm trying to figure out how to start the story I've given the working title of Sam and Cas's Trip to Detroit. Damn it, how do I have no titles for that and like, twelve for the other one? (Seriously: Angels Don't Do Booty Calls. All's Fair in Love and the End of Days. Jimmy Novak's Happily Ever After, With Cheeseburgers. These are all titles I like and consider acceptable for THAT story. I can't find titles for anything ELSE though.)

In my head, Ruby keeps calling Crowley "the Garden snake" and Dean keeps not hearing the capital in that and wondering who the hell Crowley is that Ruby thinks he's totally fangless but capable of helping them.

[personal profile] grey_bard pointed out to me that back in Mystery Spot, the identity the Trickster pretends is totally Jimmy Novak's. A wife named Amelia? A job selling ad time? Okay, so he added a spare kid. But uh. FLAIL. And the thing is? The way the timeline runs on Jimmy, Castiel was probably already courting him by that late in season 3. Suddenly I am wondering if the Trickster's interest in Sam and Dean was reignited by Castiel shopping for a host.

We went to renfaire with [personal profile] traykor on Saturday and now my legs hurt and I have a plot bunny about Sam and Dean hunting wyverns at faire. And I have to tell you. Dean has garb.

jmtorres: Fight Club: animated with porn insert. Inches on the reel-to-reel. (vid)
I appear to have accomplished 42 seconds of a vid tonight. Not so much in the way of homework, but yay vid.

This is a weird one in that... it's not fully formed in my head, but I'm not feeling the need to pre-clip for it. Like, I had a thesis centered on the choruses, and working on the verse has been... it's flowed. Like, when I get to each line I know what to do with each line, so I know exactly where to go get it. Mostly. There's been some cases of "Cas, could you please be a little more badass now" and "Stop simpering, Ruby, I swear to God, no one would know you were a demon." But like, most of the stuff has been just there, right where I need it to be.

[personal profile] grey_bard asked me if it was coming together so fast because I'd clipping for the last week, which I haven't been. I've been watching stuff? But mostly not even with intent, and so crazy out of order that it's kind of hilarious that I can tell a remotely linear story with this. Weirdly, I think that my vid-brain image memory must be connected heavily to my fic-brain plot memory, because while I wasn't watching with intent to vid, I was watching with intent to write. So a lot of stuff got entered into the mental encyclopedia that way, I'm guessing.

I should write up my workflow with Final Cut at some point, because the way I'm set up it's adaptable to clip or not to clip, whatever works best at a given moment. And I think this is key to letting your creative juices flow. Sometimes you need to hunt and peck for the best iteration of a repeating theme, sometimes you need to be able to ram footage straight from a whole episode file directly onto the timeline with no intermediate steps to slow you down and get in your way. Or I need, anyway.

So yeah. I cut 42 seconds of a vid tonight, which, seriously, comes out to something like six or seven seconds per hour, which is... a lot, really. That's like, the night after Vividcon extension deadline pace, [personal profile] niqaeli can attest. There is no deadline on this! I don't know what's gotten into me! I'm usually a lot more methodical. Well, that's kind of a lie. Let's say, I'm usually methodical for two months and then finishing shit in a fucking hurry last minute. I do not usually start with the fucking hurry. This is weird for me.

I am feeling pretty awesome. I am going to be absolutely exhausted trashed by the end of the week but I am not having quite the same love/hate relationship with sleep I had been? Mostly I don't feel guilty for it. The fun part will be AND THEN ZOMG SCHOOL.

I keep having vid ideas a mile a minute. Various people keep encouraging them. I feel like the creative juices are flowing! I am sort of headdesk at apparently everything I make from here to eternity will be meta, but maybe I should just accept that as who I am. Hm.
jmtorres: (sherlock holmes 2009)
So I did I cut of Bad Romance and got it down from 4:55 to 3:34 and sent it off to [personal profile] grey_bard to listen to, but it occurs to me that this could probably benefit from a listener who's not familiar with the ah, canonical shifts in the song. I promised since, oh, about the second time I saw the movie that this vid would say everything I wanted said and that if it didn't I would cry and hang up my hat as a vidder because clearly I would be no good at communicating in the medium.

So I will limit my remarks here and let the vid do most of the talking. I really only want to say three things:

1. An expansion of the credits:
[personal profile] jmtorres and [personal profile] niqaeli were the primary vidders in the sense of putting material on the timeline.

[personal profile] traykor, [personal profile] echan, and [personal profile] grey_bard did lots and lots additional clipping above and beyond what [personal profile] jmtorres and [personal profile] niqaeli managed.

[personal profile] grey_bard also recorded the vocal track for the last verse specifically for this project. The other women whose singing I sampled for this vid are Joni Mitchell and Lorenna McKennit.

[personal profile] killabeez and [livejournal.com profile] slasher69 are two vidders to whose work we paid homage. Those vids were: Killa's Dante's Prayer, because Killa is a seminal Trek vidder of the modern era (Dante's Prayer has been cited as "Hey, you guys! We can use those computers things for vidding!"), and Kandy Fong's Both Sides Now, which is, so far as I know, the earliest vid of which we have visual record (see this OTW journal article for more on the history of vidding).

The following fangirls took pictures of themselves in Vulcan salute for me to use at the end of the vid: [personal profile] ysobel, [livejournal.com profile] lierdumoa, [personal profile] settiai, [personal profile] lferion, [personal profile] azurelunatic, [personal profile] revolutionaryjo, [personal profile] gchick, [personal profile] zarhooie, [livejournal.com profile] missingwatch.

[personal profile] elfling made the awesome costumes we wore to Club Vivid.

I would also like to give a special nod to [personal profile] nshoe, who, while not one of our women's voices in the traditional sense, did help out with Memory Alpha abuse for clipping and making one of my hard drives live again. His wife, [personal profile] niqaeli, also notes that he was very patient with the crazy women in the house.

2. I did, briefly, want to explain the title, because I used a metaphor that I thought was not uncommon, but google entirely disagrees. So you may never have heard it before unless you read all the same stuff I do. [livejournal.com profile] papersky writes about her spearpoint theory; the example she was using it on when I appropriated it into my personal vocabulary was the Vorkosigan novels, how the later novels like Brothers in Arms and Memory are that sharp point on the long spear, they have an emotional impact because of the history of the other novels they carry. I consider the Star Trek Reboot movie to be the sharp point. Since I'm trying not to overexplain the vid, I'll leave the rest of the metaphor unspoken.

3. My hat is made of tin.

I will now take questions from the audience.

(Holy cow, it's harder to hear people cry than to hear them laugh.)

[personal profile] echan's first vid ever premiered at Club Vivid last night, a Hustle vid called Smart Con. But to our bafflement it had the weirdest glitch I've ever seen--it looped. Seamlessly. It wasn't even out of sync. The part that repeated covered up another part of her vid, so the hilarious MTV con she vidded was not shown.

[personal profile] echan seems to be taking it fairly well. We assured her that someone's vid gets screwed up every year, it's just one of those things that happens when you have eleventy-billion vids to deal with, and it really was seamless. We don't yet know what it'll look like on that DVDs we all get to take home from con, because I checked the version we submitted and it was correct--so it could be a glitch specific to the Club Vivid playlist burn. In any case, it will be correct on the House of Torres DVDs ($3 in con suite on Sunday and thereafter perhaps on the internets) and for download when I get home on Monday.

After about twenty-five hours on the road, we have stopped (as planned! just not quite so late!) at a Motel 6 just short of St. Louis. We'll be in Chicago tomorrow... evening, probably. Yay Vividcon!

Things left to be doing:
I am making a Merlin vid with [personal profile] ysobel. I have clipped up to... halfway through the Lancelot episode. OMG so screwed.

I am needing to be mastering the DVD for House of Torres that we are, theoretically, selling at Vividcon! (For $3 a pop. Orphan vids table takes cash only. Plan ahead.)

I am about half done embroidering the insignia on my cosplay for Club Vivid.

I have a hard time walking up to people at con to whom I don't talk all the time online, so if I do not approach you, it is probably because OMG YOU ARE TOO AWESOME FOR ME. Feel free to approach me. You will recognize me by the blue hair. Yes, I dyed my hair to match my dress again.

OMGWTFVIVIDCON.
jmtorres: Fight Club: animated with porn insert. Inches on the reel-to-reel. (vid)
So I'm compiling a DVD of our vids to be selling at Vividcon (and possibly on the webs if there is demand) for some cost in the range of $3-$4 US (plus a couple bucks shipping if webs) and I am trying to decide what all should be on the DVD, mostly because I have recently discovered that some of my early work makes me wince.

(My vid post, because I'm not going to link them all individually.)

lists of vids, cut for length )

Vids of Juls' that Juls is considering not putting on the DVD because old and wince:
  • I Want You, Witchblade

  • American Tune, Andromeda

  • Rain, Farscape

And now, a poll. This is partially to give me a clue how many DVDs we'll need to be making for VVC, partially to demand your advice re vids to disinclude.

(If you are coming from LJ, sign in at the OpenID page to be able to vote.)

Juls is wrong about vid X, Juls should include it anyway:

American Tune

I have a justification for my above belief:

Juls is right not to include everything, and furthermore, Juls should also not include some other stuff:

jmtorres: Londo and G'Kar from B5. Animated text: Slash cliches #3, 4, AND 5: Mortal Enemies Trapped in an Elevator About to DIE. (cliche)
[personal profile] grey_bard is making a vid about every time you've ever read a fic about The Blond Bent To Suck The Older Man's Cock only like, in canon, the blond ain't blond. So it's awful and wrong. Like when fic tells you Rodney McKay is blond. Or Blair Sandburg. (PS, do we need to talk about this? McKay is not blond. Nor is Blair Sandburg.) Also, when fic gets eye color wrong and stuff, she's also looking for that, just honestly, blond is so the worst offender.

Go tell her who else is not blond! On dreamwidth or on livejournal.
jmtorres: Electric Mayhem: the Muppet Band's bus. (music)
I am a fucking rock star. [personal profile] niqaeli too. We are a fucking rock star.

(Is it normal to cry at your own vid? For like, three hours?)

So apparently the first time around it says TORES TUQ instead of toreS tuq. Que sera, sera. Sticking with the all caps one. Also it are TNG style et pas la série originale. But I delegated to [personal profile] echan who is making me a labelmaker Klingon logo to go with the Chuck vid credits because she's awesome. And I'm totally making a vid and not poking at conlangs on the internet.
jmtorres: Daniel from SG1 pours lots of sugar into his coffee. (SG1)
Vid: Highway Café of the Damned
Vidders: [personal profile] jmtorres and [personal profile] niqaeli
Premiered at: [livejournal.com profile] vividcon '08
Fandom: Stargate (primarily SG-1, some of the original movie)

illustrated notes )

So, to sum up: you are not wrong to look for context and subtext and metatext. While our primary goal was to make a funny vid and it thrilled us that people laughed, we also had a lot to say. We are deep and funny. Our vid contains multitudes.

Oh, and one other thing. There's a story that goes with it.
