Should I hit the cider yet? No, scratch that, definitely hitting the cider. The question is, should I hit the brandy yet?
Ugh, I keep finding better clips for the parts I've already done instead of new clips for the parts I need to finish. Dear self: STOP TWEAKING. You can tweak after you have a whole draft.

I am 2/3 of the way through my class, and 38 seconds (plus intro and topper) done with my festivid. I will not stay up another three hours for either of those. I did write some notes down on the vid to help keep track of which bits go where in sequences since I've decided to vid out of order...
I'm about 24% done with the vid by timeline so maybe by Wednesday or Thursday I'll have a full draft, which will at least give me a day or so for beta? Oh my god, I'm terrified I'm not going to have enough footage. Must finish throwing what I have at the timeline before I freak out about that, because honestly, so far ACTUAL problem has been "OH NO THIS INSTRUMENTAL STRETCHES ON FOREVER wait what do you mean that's only about five clips worth? I can't do that amount of story in five clips!"
*FLAIL* OH MY GOD VID
Raise your hand if you want to be on a festivids filter and be in the know about my subject matter so I can flail more specifically.

I appear to have accomplished 42 seconds of a vid tonight. Not so much in the way of homework, but yay vid.
This is a weird one in that... it's not fully formed in my head, but I'm not feeling the need to pre-clip for it. Like, I had a thesis centered on the choruses, and working on the verse has been... it's flowed. Like, when I get to each line I know what to do with each line, so I know exactly where to go get it. Mostly. There's been some cases of "Cas, could you please be a little more badass now" and "Stop simpering, Ruby, I swear to God, no one would know you were a demon." But like, most of the stuff has been just there, right where I need it to be.
grey_bard asked me if it was coming together so fast because I'd clipping for the last week, which I haven't been. I've been watching stuff? But mostly not even with intent, and so crazy out of order that it's kind of hilarious that I can tell a remotely linear story with this. Weirdly, I think that my vid-brain image memory must be connected heavily to my fic-brain plot memory, because while I wasn't watching with intent to vid, I was watching with intent to write. So a lot of stuff got entered into the mental encyclopedia that way, I'm guessing.
I should write up my workflow with Final Cut at some point, because the way I'm set up it's adaptable to clip or not to clip, whatever works best at a given moment. And I think this is key to letting your creative juices flow. Sometimes you need to hunt and peck for the best iteration of a repeating theme, sometimes you need to be able to ram footage straight from a whole episode file directly onto the timeline with no intermediate steps to slow you down and get in your way. Or I need, anyway.
So yeah. I cut 42 seconds of a vid tonight, which, seriously, comes out to something like six or seven seconds per hour, which is... a lot, really. That's like, the night after Vividcon extension deadline pace,
niqaeli can attest. There is no deadline on this! I don't know what's gotten into me! I'm usually a lot more methodical. Well, that's kind of a lie. Let's say, I'm usually methodical for two months and then finishing shit in a fucking hurry last minute. I do not usually start with the fucking hurry. This is weird for me.

I wish I had three or four other multi meta mash-up vids to fuck up on before I did this one. I hate this one being the practice run.
I wish I had more time before vividcon deadline, because I really wish I could release it at vividcon, but at this point I am beginning to fear not.
I wish this one didn't need to be released this year to be potent. But this really is one of those zeitgeist au courant things.

Bran (the first media drive I had, which is now the traveling slut drive and four years old) had another breakdown. One of the pins on the power connection was bent and broke when
nshoe tried to straighten it. However,
nshoe put Bran's brains in another enclosure! This will be zir third. It's temporary and involves tape.
Can haz Bran via USB now, at least. I have heart for
nshoe.

My Vulcan sisters!
Jun. 24th, 2009 12:46 pmSo I am working on this vid, this crazy vid that runs all over Star Trek from TOS to Reboot and back again plus fandom on top of it. I am looking for two things right now that I would appreciate your help with, internets:
1. I am looking for media which is not Star Trek wherein characters or famous people do the Vulcan salute. I have started with this list from wiki but if you know of more, especially if you know of instance of women saluting ala Vulcan, please tell me.
2. I would love to use also in this vid images (still or video) of YOU doing the Vulcan salute. If you have ever dorked it up on camera in the past or would like to do so now, SEND IMAGES OF YOUR VULCAN SALUTATIONS TO: juliette dot torres at gmail dot com.
Feel free to dress as far up or down as you like. Seriously, this can be, like, off your webcam, or if you're into photography and wanna do something really snazzy, that's cool too. If you have a disability that prevents you from saluting (
ysobel, I am looking at you, I totally want you in this, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE), I invite you to take one of the images from wiki or Memory Alpha or to make your own, print it out, and mount a paper hand on a popcicle stick to hold while you are photographed. Personally, I think foam fingers might be even more awesome, but I don't think we have time to mock them up.
Because you see, this is for a vid due in two days. Therefore I need your images by Thursday, June 25th, 2009.
Again: Send me your images or videos of you doing the Vulcan salute! Especially if you are a fangirl! (Fanboys: I love you too. But I want my women less invisible!)
--Email to: juliette dot torres a gmail dot com
--Use the subject line: Vulcan salute
--You can send an attachment up to 10MB or send me a link. If you are using a file-sharing service I prefer to download from sendspace or megaupload.
--Include in the text of the email the name under which you would like to be credited in the vid. (I will not be linking any specific names to any specific images, but I would like to thank contributors)
--Deadline: Thursday, June 25th, 2009!
Feel free to spread this far and wide. The more the merrier!
ETA: if you are visiting my dreamwidth from livejournal and would like to comment, you'll need to go to the open id login page as there is a bug that doesn't let you login in with open id on comment pages. However, I do prefer to receive your (many and adorable) images via email, which is: juliette dot torres at gmail dot com.
ETA2: By "Thursday" I mean if it's still Thursday somewhere on the world, you can bet I'm still not done yet and you can send me salutes. Probably also on Friday, but only while it's still Friday Eastern time. Live long and prosper!

Paper vidding
Jun. 24th, 2009 09:16 amWith all the tools at my disposal (I am sitting in front of a computer as we speak converse textually here on your monitor, I know you are all shocked to learn I am not communicating with the interwebs via direct neural connection)--with all of the resources I could be using, I am still paper vidding.
For some reason this works for me. Not just planning out, but planning out on paper. On dead trees. Column A, lyrics with lots of space. Column B, lots of clip thoughts.
Favorite note so far: "Time travel fangirling." You guys. The ENTIRE STAR TREK UNIVERSE post-TOS is made of fangirls who want to be Kirk and Spock et al. I AM NOT KIDDING.
At any rate--at least I'm vidding.

Life after vidding
Jun. 6th, 2009 04:54 amYou guys. I saw daylight. I went outside for longer than it takes to get into a car. I went swimming.
PS Vidders near and far know about the vid farr, yes?
niqaeli and I think we discovered the plak vid, when the combination of hours of a/v input, sleep deprivation, substance abuse culminate in total hysteria.
The funny thing is, we have record of the symptoms of plak vid affecting us about two days before we realized what was happening.

So apparently the first time around it says TORES TUQ instead of toreS tuq. Que sera, sera. Sticking with the all caps one. Also it are TNG style et pas la série originale. But I delegated to
echan who is making me a labelmaker Klingon logo to go with the Chuck vid credits because she's awesome. And I'm totally making a vid and not poking at conlangs on the internet.

Apr. 28th, 2009 12:13 amRemaining episodes to clip: 6. Finished with the main Jill arc.
Season finale: GLEE CAPS. Some narrative concerns covered in GLEE CAPS. Also, does this still work for my vid?
The vid
echan came up with this weekend and started clipping today: MORE DONE THAN MY VID. WTF WTF WTF.
Her boyfriend and I are entering a suicide pact over our inability to vid as fast as she does.
