deep fanfic thoughts
Feb. 7th, 2011 03:50 pmSo I can't decide how "it's the future!" handwave! easy to make gene-scanning in the Vorkosigan books. In present day of course it takes time, especially if you're trying to look at a whole genome and not just match odd bits. You have to culture a sample because you need multiple copies of the DNA to have results worth looking at.
Is there any canon I'm blanking on that mentions how long this takes in Vorkosiganverse? Does anyone have instant DNA scanners in use medically or forensically? I'm thinking in Komarr it's like an hour, tops, that they wait in the clinic while checking what version of Vorzohn's Dystrophy Nikki has, but that's a limited bit of his DNA they'd be checking. What's the exact reference?
Hmmmm.
