singularityAnd uh, now from me:
I started off fairly analytical, was curious about the choice of casting on the first captain (and hoping the casting of a
Pakistani wasn't going to result in some shenanigans where villain ship ate him and he became the face of evil of the movie--thank fuck no on that score).
And then there was a moment, in the space battle Kirk was born in, when the explosion noises went away and the music crescendoed instead as George Kirk went to his heroic death--and I knew I was being emotionally manipulated, and I consciously chose to accept emotional manipulation, to embrace it, to turn of the critical faculties and go along for the ride.
I think the only other time the critical faculties surfaced was when Uhura ordered a Cardassian sunrise. Cardassians came up in TNG-era and the earliest date of contact between them and the Federation Memory Alpha can come up with is mid-2340s. (For comparison: Kirk was born in 2233.)
echan gently reminded me it was an AU now. I FUCKING GUESS. IF THEY ALREADY KNOW THE CARDASSIANS, MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF DS9 ARE NOT TRUE. I mean, duh in the "probably none of the characters of that era will even be born as recognizably them" way, but Cardassia and Bajor have a history that's NOT going to be the same, what is the deal with the occupation, has the Federation taken Bajor under its wing in Kirk's time or is it dealing with the Cardassians diplomatically or surely they aren't at war at this point? Seriously it's not like DS9 is my favorite series or anything. And it also has TIME HAS NO MEANING aliens who MIGHT TAKE EXCEPTION TO YOUR SHENANIGANS. (PS I am sort of scared that this is... a version of the mirror universe? I vaguely remember that explanation of the history in DS9-era mirror-verse included "the earth empire and the Cardassians made whoopee until the Klingons kicked their asses and liberated Bajor.")
Am wondering if we are meant to believe Spock et al's lives went along merrily uninterrupted until they did/didn't meet Kirk as in the original timeline. Because that would imply Spock and Uhura were getting it on in the original timeline. Really there must have been ripples out from initial event that changed them all to greater or lesser degrees; some of them are probably not even genetically the same people they were: Chekov is four years the wrong age and has curly hair. Ahem.
I really expected them to get sucked into the black hole at the end and go back to like, last week, and save the planet Vulcan. I really really did. I don't quite know what to do with how they didn't.
But seriously: I went along for the ride and my squee is verily and we got to the end credits and I was gasping as Nimoy gave the speech and the music came up and
echan said, "Are you having a moment?" and I said, "YES," and then she held my hand while I gleed some more. I just. You guys. YOU GUYS.
*flail* *paul gross arms* AND MAJEL BARRETT RODDENBERRY OH MY GOD.
(For three quarters of the movie I was dyyying to pee and knew I could not get up at any point during the movie. And yes I stayed until the very very end of the credits. It's a film school thing.)
Random other thoughts: I think a technical pass on Bechdel? When Uhura and her roommate were talking about the message Uhura intercepted in the labs. It was pass on Uhura's side, on roommate's side it was all about "can you go away so I can play with the boy under the bed," so I don't even know.
Hey, the alien sitting between Kirk and Uhura in the bar: relative of Morn's, y/n?
I LOVED IT UNEQUIVOCALLY. DEEPLY TRULY MADLY. I VOLUNTARILY WENT INTO DEEPTEACH RECEPTIVE STATE AND TOOK IT ALL IN AS TRUTH. CLEARLY THERE WAS KAT IN THE BAG OF POPCORN I SCARFED. (
echan will know what I mean.) OH MY GOD YOU GUYS. OH MY GOD. I CAN'T EVEN TALK ABOUT ALL THE THINGS I LOVED, I WILL DIE OF IT.
PS according to the GI Joe preview we saw, Ninth Doctor will be destroying the Earth. Will you all disown me if I go to that movie for him?

Secondly: maybe they can have a Cardassian Sunrise without having directly encountered the Cardassians? I totally thought of the same thing, and then decided that interstellar trade relations wind up with them having exports from cultures they haven't personally encountered.
