But anyone who hasn't heard of him is dumb and mute and blind.
Dude. That's unfair.
I'm a slasher, I was an anime fan for a good few years, but I was never an X-Files fan. I'd seen three episodes in total over the years it was running on TV, and Krycek never appeared in those.
When I was at a slasher gathering a couple years ago, and people had songvids on TV, there was a Mulder/Krycek vid and when I asked "So, who's that guy?" I got the same reaction. *is still a little miffed*
Krycek isn't hydrogen. He isn't universal. You'd pick up on a little knowledge of him through being into US-TV fandoms, but if you were just into anime and not too into TV or the X-Files, it's not particularly hard to believe that you wouldn't know of him.
To me, it's not so much what you watched as being in the community. I have a very hard time imagining being in the slash community long without hearing his name.
Well, it's a sign of a part of the slash community at a particular moment in time. When slash was huge, I was more a part of the anime/yaoi community than the slash community. (I mean, I knew/read/wrote yaoi, but didn't even know of the *existance* of slash for TV shows. At the moment, that's hard to believe, because LJ's made everyone more multi-fandom, but 5-7 years ago it was much, much easier to be a part of mailing lists and archives and not come across other parts of fandom.)
I agree... I'm also one of those anime/video game fangirls who's heard Krycek's name (associated with the X-Files) and not much more. I don't have a beef with live-action fandoms, but I really don't care about any of them, and I lived for so long without cable TV or TV reception at all (I only own a TV to play video games on!) that I don't know anything about TV fandoms in general. I've seen one episode of the X-Files ever. Although I do have cable now, I mainly use it for watching the Daily Show.
I too find it slightly offensive to be told, "oh, you don't know who this slashable character in this one fandom is, you lack TRUE FEN POWER!!!" When I got into fandom about 7 years ago there was a huge divide between the slash and yaoi fandoms (as we can semi-categorize them based on their subject matter), and while that has shrunk somewhat over time (especially due to giant overarching fandoms like Star Wars, LotR & HP), there's still a huge divide, and expecting someone from one side to know details about the other is a bit unfair. And that includes knowing the identity some character who only appears in later episodes of a TV show that isn't running anymore.
okay, I guess I've heard of him, but seeing a name on some fanfics you don't read and reading about his fans on fandom_wank doesn't really mean I know who he is? ^^; It's like saying to someone who only reads/writes bandslash and RPS, "What do you mean, you don't know who Sephiroth is?" If you'd asked me, like, prior to the f_wank stuff, if I had heard of him, I'd be like, "what's a Krycek?" Ya know?
