*grumble*

For one class I have, the prof requires both digital and hard copy of papers (for submission to anti-plagiarism websites, and for her to use red pen on). Fine. Whatever.

The deadline for turning in the digital copy of your paper is midnight the night before class. The deadline for turning in the digital copy of your paper is TWELVE HOURS BEFORE CLASS.

Professor mine, you don't think anyone uses those twelve hours to get homework done? Or you just don't think anyone should? And what the hell business is that of yours anyway?

Well, if the digital copy is just for antiplagiarism purposes, then the time between submission of the hard copy and the class represents the time the professor can review the paper. Maybe she picks them up at eight, takes them home and looks at them, then goes to sleep at midnight. Maybe she's experimented with tighter deadlines and found that too many students come late to class as a result, or mess up in other ways that would have been correctable on a longer timeframe (I know this happens because I've seen it).

OK--I can't speak for her, but I do believe from experience that setting a relatively long lead time for electronic submissions does decrease the number of disasters/excuses/complaints about misunderstanding. It's certainly worth making a suggestion for a shorter time, but if she's set the rule based on experience, then you'd probably have to make a pretty persuasive case.

It's annoying, but I don't think it's that unusual. I had more than one class where the deadlines for assignments were midnight-before-the-class-session, and that was before digital submission of work was nearly as common as it is now.
