Zachariah said, "In heaven, I have six wings and four faces, one of which is a lion." The back half of that is so awesome that first time around I missed the first two words.
In heaven. Which implies that's not where they are now.
Yeah, one of my commenters said the same thing. Honestly, I don't think it was anything but awkward wording because I think as a matter of storytelling, it would be weird to backtrack now - esp. since Cas confirmed they were in Heaven and Cas should know. But, you know, I could be wrong.
Wait, now that I'm thinking about Cas's end of things I am forced to wonder how long they were dead before he found out, because that seemed pretty instantaneous but logically if he never knows where they are and was unable to reach them by phone for a location, how would he find out? Angel radio? (Do we trust everything we hear on angel radio, re: they're in heaven?) Did Walt and Roy go brag? Okay, the how long were they dead thing is going to bug me for a while I think.
I suspect another angel tipped Castiel off, and then Cas called the boys' cells and no answer and then Cas did the spell to talk to Dean in heaven and it worked. Who might have tipped Cas off and why, I don't know. As for how long Sam and Dean were dead, it wasn't long enough for housekeeping to come have a look-see, so I'm thinking a couple hours tops. (Though now I'm wondering why nobody came to investigate the gunshots. And also I want the coda fic where somebody did investigate the gunshots and the boys wake up in body bags and freak everybody out.)
Zachariah's next line is "you see this because you're...limited." So I think they are in heaven. I'm still stuck on the idea that Sam and Dean might be soulmates since they're in the same sphere of heaven.
Exactly to the second line thing. I think he means... on Earth, yeah. The vessel looks like this. But in Heaven, he's walking around in his real body, and his real body has four faces, one of which is a lion. Sadly, the Winchesters can't see his awesome.
One possibility I see is that... they're not in heaven-proper, ie the bit the angels hang out in. They're just in the Heaven metropolitan area [g]
That is, there is Heaven. Possibly just the Garden, or possibly the Garden is kind of the entryway to some larger realm. That is where God and the angels (and maybe a few saints or whatever) live. But it's surrounded by all the little adjunct heavens for all the mortals who managed to go Upstairs instead of Downstairs. It is obviously possible for mortals to travel from one adjunct-heaven to another, at least if they know what they're doing (I doubt whatshisname with the mullet is the only one), but it may be that mortals simply can't come into Heaven proper, at least without an invitation/direct angelic help.
Also, I suspect that heaven=your memory's Greatest Hits is kind of a temporary condition... that it's more a matter of what you Truly, Truly Want to Have, but it starts with your best memories because that's the easiest thing for your mind to... formulate.
