Maybe it sounds less gay if you say "he was expecting not-the-yeoman"? Like, he barely knew her, wide rank difference, overall it would be a lot less likely for her to spontaneously give him a backrub?
At this point I am honestly convinced that they WERE going for a romantic relationship for Spock and Kirk and just couln't have gotten it past the censors/ accepted by most of the audience.
I mean Gene Roddenberry has SAID that they were going for the Greek idea of love (like Alexander and Hephaiston) just without the sex. (yeah, no sex, we believe you, uhu.)
I mean to take just one of the examples from above: It's the late sixties, two man are alone and one tells the other that he's ashamed of his feelings for him. WHAT DO YOU THINK DOES THIS MEAN??????? (Think really hard it's not easy! Or is it?)
Kirk: its been a long 3 months, and I've has heard of how good Spock is at giving back rubs. Spock just isn't getting the hint, and I don't want to sound gay, so I don't say anything when the Yeoman gives me a back rub instead. Hmmm, I never noticed how nice of an ass Spock has there.... It has been a long three months and am not gay! honest!
1. They got bored during a game of chess early in the mission and decided to spend the rest of their lives messing with the crew. (Secretly, Kirk was using it as an excuse to get Spock into bed with him and--damn, still gay.)
2. In the future, everyone is omni-massageable? Star Trek is a utopia! No one minds a little man-on-man backrub (said Kirk, hoping to convince Spock).
