Dear Santa

To my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide Santa:

I am easy. I am really, really easy. I will read just about damn near anything.* You may have noticed from my requests that I am primarily a slasher, but heck, I'll read het if it's well-done.

*I hesitate to enumerate here what I don't like reading, because it has always been my experience that as soon as someone I'm writing for says "but not X" I instantly want to write X even though I never would have contemplated it previously, like Shepherd Book slash, and I hate to put that kind of temptation in anyone's path. And really, I break my own taboos, so it's not so much "don't do X" as "don't do X unless you are going to do it WELL."

Which brings me to my next point: in someone's commentary on the Etiquette of Yuletide, there was mention of the struggle some authors have between fulfilling exactly a detailed request, and writing a good story. It is my feeling that this should never be an issue. If you are struggling between writing a crappy story to my specifications and writing a good story that throws them out the window, for God's sake, write me a good story.

I am one of those people who gets so wrapped up in writing that I get to December and go, "Wait, what did I ask for? I don't remember." Whatever you write me will be a surprise. If the story tugs you off somewhere I didn't ask for, don't worry about it. I like surprises. Think of my request as a jumping off point, something to inspire you. Run with it. Make it your own.

Happy Yuletide!
Love,
Jul

Hi, sorry to add this here, but I saw no obvious "friend" post. I friended you because I am glad to have found a fellow Gaheris Rhade fan. (No, there is nothing about him in my LJ so far, cause my LJ is the new place for stuff I revamped and translated.) I hope you don't me being around and wanting to read your stuff. Falconsheart

Yeaaaah, I stuck my friending policy in my profile rather than stickying it on top of my journal. You're welcome to hang here, though I have to warn you I haven't paid much mind to Gaheris in a while.
