Doctor Who: the missing adventures

I'll be talking about the whole 2005 series so far, but only the spaces between, not the actual onscreen adventures. I am up to "Bad Wolf."

Okay. I'm pretty sure the first five episodes go back to back to back. The end of "Rose" feeds into the beginning of "The End of the World," likewise "The End of the World" feeds into "The Unquiet Dead." Rose is even wearing the same clothes right up until the Doctor makes her change rather than starting a riot in the 1860s. Wearing trousers and all that!

There could, potentially, be an extra adventure between "The Unquiet Dead" and "Aliens of London," but not a very long one, because Rose tells Micky and her mum that she's only been gone a few days, as far as she can tell. And of course "World War Three" is back to back with "Aliens of London."

I cannot recall anything about "Dalek" that makes it specifically right after "World War Three." Rose is wearing a pink t-shirt in "World War Three," but in "Dalek" she's wearing a white tank, under a jacket to begin with, I believe. So this is a potential space for a number of extra adventures.

"Dalek" seems to be back to back with "The Long Game," if only because Adam is so useless that it's unlikely he's had any adventures with them before Satellite 5. Even though Rose has had a chance to change, putting on her punky fish top--red with an asymetrical black stripe down the front.

But there's nothing in particular tying "Father's Day" to either "The Long Game" or "The Empty Child." "Father's Day" has Rose wearing a denim jacket in lieu of either punky fish or the highly inappropriate Union jack. "Father's Day" could be sandwiched in between any number of adventures--though a relatively small number between "Father's Day" and "The Empty Child," as it's apparently five days since they've been back to Earth, per the conversation after they land in London. Of course, five days could be ten episodes' worth, if they're as action-packed as the first five episodes. Who knows how many places they've been.

"The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances" are back to back, of course. I'm not sure how close "The Doctor Dances" ends up being to "Boomtown"--long enough that the Doctor will let Jack play with the TARDIS? Rose is definitely in new clothes--denim jacket over a red shirt, and, for a rarity, she's wearing a skirt. Maybe it's for Micky.

(You know, I'd comment on the Doctor, but you have to have a quick eye to tell what dark color the shirt is every week. They're all alike. There's a navy and a forest green and a cranberry.)

"Boomtown" is where we hear Rose talk about some of the extra adventures. "It's all very well going to Platform One ["The End of the World"] and the Justice Year [I don't think we saw that!] and the glass pyrimad of Sanclene (sp?) [Nope, w didn't see that, either]" and then later on, the story of the planet "Woman Wept," and the beach with the frozen sea, which may or may not have been on Woman Wept. There doesn't seem to be anything to indicate whether these adventures occurred before or after they picked up Jack.

By "Bad Wolf," Jack has his own TARDIS key (it took until "Aliens of London," roughly four days, for the Doctor to give Rose one). Rose is wearing a red top in "Bad Wolf" that might be the same as she had under her jacket in "Boom Town," I'm not sure. (The denim jacket, Jack sees on the rail in the TARDIS, where she left it before they got beamed off.)

Jack The Doctor makes a comment about them having visited Maraget's unpronounceable and unspellable planet (ETA: Raxacoricofallapatorius, says [livejournal.com profile] ide_cyan), as well as Kyoto, Japan in 1336. I cannot find the reference, though. Driving me up the wall. [livejournal.com profile] wishfulaces pointed out it was the Doctor, not Jack who said it and I found it right away.

Ninth Doctor books say's they'll be visiting a prison (the Justice Year Rose mentioned?), the 1920s (which could throw a wrench in the five days between "Father's Day" and "The Empty Child" interpretation of the line about how long you can wander space and time without stumbling upon Earth--Rose and the Doctor may have visited Earth admidst various other adventures between the two episodes) and, apparently, present-day Earth to visit Rose's mum. Hn. This one seems the trickiest to me because Rose clearly didn't visit Earth between "Rose" and "Aliens of London," or her mum wouldn't still be all flipped, surely? And I didn't get the feeling that Rose had seen Micky between "World War Three" and "Boom Town." And the timeline from "Boom Town" to "Bad Wolf" is relatively fixed with just the two stops in between, no time for Earth.

Of course, time is in flux, and all. *shrug*

There was a whole series of Dr Who books published by Virgin called The Missing Adventures, y'know. (Then when the rights reverted to the Beeb they called them Past Doctor Adventures. PDAs.)

Nope, I didn't know. *grins*

PDAs. That's great.

Wow. Well done for getting that grappled into shape; it's not easy, with the time travel and all. Clearly by 'Bad Wolf', Rose has been around a bit. (In more ways than one, I'd conjecture. Did I mention I love Rose? Anyway...)

It's tradition that the Dr always wears pretty much the same clothes. It's a kind of uniform. Although presumably he does has several sets as otherwise the Tardis might get a little sniffy. ^^

I am so going to be rooted in front of the TV tonight! And I promise to spoiler-cut if I feel the need to mention it in my journal aterwards. ^_~

(I've still managed to stay unspoiled for the 'Bad Wolf' thing!! Go me! *touches wood madly*)

*snerk* And with the Doctor, the Captain of Innuendo, or the Telepathic TARDIS, eh?

Maybe Time Lords don't perspire?

But his shirt does change color now and again.

And Jack randomly went clothes shopping in Cardiff. Y'know, I don't care if his ship *did* just blow up and all his stuff with it, it's still gay that they went out on the town and he went clothes shopping. *pets biJack*

I've still managed to stay unspoiled for the 'Bad Wolf' thing!! Go me! *touches wood madly*

I am less spoiled than I thought I was, but still pissed off that I was spoiled for the *episode* "Bad Wolf."

*dances around* Countdown! I've even been avoiding the trailers.

agrees with [livejournal.com profile] scribblemoose Dr. generally wears same standard outfit, companions differ--some never changed (was so happy when Tegan finally changed out of the stewardess outfit or when Peri finally got out of the bikini), and some change every storyline.

Stories were usually considered back to back as well unless they mentioned leaving somewhere else.

[identity profile] wishfulaces.livejournal.com 2005-06-18 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but a lot of that uniformity was all down to JNT standardizing things--even Tom Baker changed his coat and scarf and waistcoat on occasion, and the previous Doctors & companions more so.

Oh, and between "Boomtown" & "Bad Wolf" they went to 13th century Kyoto. I think the Doctor mentions it, not Jack? Have to watch "Bad Wolf" again. Damn. The things I do to be a fan.

*sunny smile*

*rechecks* Yes, you are right. Why did I think it was Jack?

*is working from the inverse proposition for purely fanfic related reasons*

Thanks for the post, I've been writing a Doctor Who/Eroica crossover and still don't know where it could actually fit in with the series. I /was/ thinking between "Father's Day" and "The Empty Child" but I obviously missed the 'five days' reference you mentioned, so now that won't work *sniffsniff* ah the perils of fanfiction writing...of course there's always the AU excuse ;)

btw, I friended you, I hope you don't mind

*snerk* In theory they have to return Klaus and Dorian to Earth before going on their merry way, yes? In that case, five days after *that*, Empty Child.

[identity profile] sindeniirelle.livejournal.com 2005-06-19 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
**headdesk** of course! Now all I have to do is avoid blowing up the Earth and everything will work out...

Heh. Very DNA of you.
