Young at Heart

I want to talk about my Storytelling class today, but I'm going to have to explain the quacking so that this has the remotest chance of coming across.

There's this group, Trout Fishing In America, who are actually friends of mine, but anyway: they do kids shows and adult shows (well, now they do kids shows and everybody shows, but they used to play in bars) and when they do kids shows, they always play Five Little Ducks.

Keith: This is the stupidest song ever written.

It used to be 100 little ducks, but it's been reduced down to five. It goes like this:

Five little ducks went out one day
Over the hills and faraway
Mother Duck said, "Quack! Quack! Quack! Quack!"
And four of the cute baby ducks came back

dropping down a number each verse, and the audience is supposed to participate by quacking. Ezra adores the song, even its long version, and will skip up to 67 ducks or so if you don't quack loud enough. But by the third to last verse, he'll be satisfied and come back down, so you get a verse like:

Sixty-five little ducks went out one day,
Over the hills and far away
Mother Duck said, "Quack! Quack! Quack! Quack!"
And two of the cute baby ducks came back.

And the entire audience will burst into applause.

Ezra: Why are they clapping?
Keith: Maybe because the song is almost over! Or, maybe they know it's time for the competitive quacking portion of the show.

When I was little, they sometimes split the last two verses into boy quacking and girl quacking, but by the time I was 18, it was usually adult quacking and kid quacking.

Keith: Now, children, I want you to turn and look to your parents as they provide you with an example of how to quack with dignity.

So you would get one verse of bizarrely polite, "Quack, quack, quack, quack," and then you would get one verse of

QUACK QUACK QUACK QUACK!

Do you know, the first time I heard the song after I'd turned 18, I sat in the audience wondering, which am I going to quack with?

They actually did left side of the audience and right side of the audience that day, and prolonged my decision. Keith told me I would know when I was grown-up enough to quack with the adults, and I should quack with the kids until then.

So! Today in storytelling class she gave us these little stories to memorize just to practice on. Mine was Why The Rabbit Has A Short Tail, and it's because he tricked some alligators and one of them bit it off. So I'm up in front of the room hopping around and doing alligator chomps with my arms, and I think to my self--

QUACK!

I remember that song! I don't remember where I heard it, though.

And alligator chomps!

SO very awesome. =)

*hums happily* Little bunny foo foo, hopping through the forest, scooping up the field mice and throwing them out the window!

That is a GREAT story. And hopefully, we'll both always be QUACK! at heart instead of Quack.

Random: I remember recently that there was a guy that legally changed his name to Trout Fishing in America. He had blue hair and went by Trout. [/Random]
