touring fangirl

So I will be in NYC June 12-June 17. The purpose of my journey is: fangirl (verb, intransitive).

I am interested in hanging out with my friends and making new fannish friends! Therefore, if you live somewhere reachable by the subway system, I am willing to come to you. If you live somewhere withing a day trip of the city and there's something you wanna do (like hang out with me! or go to a museum or see a show or something social with me!) you could come to me.

I have this vague idea about rereading So You Want to Be a Wizard and recreating Nita and Kit's Ordeal (hopefully without actually changing universes). This might be a multi-day endeavor, or I could just be overly optimistic, given the amount of time I spent communing with my laptop on [personal profile] grey_bard's couch when last I visited. Also probably I should just acquire braces for all my joints now and bring them with me pre-emptively.

More realistic and concrete plans include going out to Coney Island to go to the beach, as I live in a landlocked location but am part selkie on my mother's side and cannot resist the call of the sea.

I am interested in (but last time failed to make plans I followed through on regarding) MoMA, the Guggenheim, visiting the New York Public Library on a day when it is open (last time I managed to go by on July 4th, which is, in fact, a national holiday, when libraries are closed), Paley Center, probably many other historical sites or museums I have not heard of. I will probably visit one of these this time (maybe two, I'm pretty sure the library is somewhere on the Ordeal walking tour).

I will almost certainly spend at least part of one day in Central Park.

Also I am interested in food. I like many kinds of food. I like trying new foods. New York is a great place for this and hey yeah. I also like trying new drinks and would not mind getting medium trashed one night of my trip if a few people knew a good place for that and wanted to hang with me for that ("medium trashed" = walking a bit wobbly, I love people, I may be interested in snuggling other interested parties).

I might like to go see some form of live entertainment (theatrical, musical, burlesque, who knows). Maybe!

But: fannish people. I totally want to hang out with you and meet more of you. You should say hi if any of the above sounds like cool stuff to do! And like, look, I kind of fail at keeping in touch with people, so even if it's been years since we've talked, if you wanna meet up I would be excited for it! Even if we've never really talked personally, just been on each other's reading lists, I would be excited for it! Like, don't think this invitation is just for my besties. This is for everyone I have conceivably run across in fandom like, ever. I am totally serious, I want to hang out with you.

Fair warning: I might talk about Teen Wolf.

I am hereby pencilling you in, though the family's transportation schedule (feat. Mom's Taxi) is so complex it might fall through.

You should go to Dead Horse Bay! It's a place in Brooklyn where a turn-of-the-century dump is being eroded by the sea, so tons of old glass and ceramic litter the beach. You can collect all kind of cool old bottles, many intact, and other interesting bits and pieces. I've been wanting to visit for ages.

Alas, I do not actually live in New York! (although my boyfriend just moved there, but he will in fact be coming down to visit me this weekend.)

If you go, though, I'd love to hear about what you find!

Hi, I'm a fannish person and it looks like I'll be in town then too. I'm still nailing down plans, but it looks likely. Are you interested in possibly meeting for lunch on the 14th? Or checking out the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Company?

Fantastic! I'll be in Brooklyn, so I may be open for other Brooklyn-y things. We shall see! I've got you penciled in and will confirm details as we get into June. Yay!

Hi! I'm solidifying my June 13-18 plans and wanted to check with you: is the afternoon of 14th still a good time to hang out/check out the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Company?

Feel free to email me at tarzanic at gmail dot com to talk times, contact info, etc.

Oh, no worries! Sorry, I just didn't want to forget. I've got you penciled in. Thanks for letting me know and we can confirm later.

I've got an appointment on the 14th at 10:30am near Bryant Park (should last an hour-ish) and am thinking about going to their free juggling lessons in the park 12-1pm. I believe the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Company is open 11-5. Yay!

Sounds perfect! Email me at tarzanic at gmail if you'd like to trade cell numbers.

Since you knit, are you going to Worldwide Knitting in Public Day on the 15th (2-4:30) in Bryant Park? I'm planning to drag another friend along.

Oooh, sounds fun! However, it looks like my timing probably won't fit. A friend is coming into town Friday night and I'm meeting her bus, then grabbing a late dinner. Keep me posted, though?

visiting the New York Public Library on a day when it is open

I resemble that remark!

I'm open to doing stuff, one on one or in a group.

If you'd like to revisit it, here's the link to my guide to Manhattan's highlights.

I don't mind hearing about Teen Wolf, though I hope you haven't turned into an Omegaverse fan....

The weekdays this week are a bear, schedule-wise, with my doctor appointments, my grandma's appointments, and Dahlia's graduation/my brother's birthday. Friday I have physical therapy from 1:30-2:30 p.m.; I don't know if that'd work with the Friday plans you already have. The weekend should be fine for me though.

I have your number. *g*

Very busy. Saturday or Sunday is cool, though some things in Manhattan aren't open or aren't open for long on weekend days. I don't think I've met Mecurtin before, though sometimes I've met fen in large groups. And yay!

With your knee jacked, are you going to be mobile?

I talked to a fan-friend who often goes to NYC for meetups about where to meet & eat where we could hear ourselves talk. She suggested going to one of the stores on this list (depending on where we are) and taking a picnic to Central Park or other green space, because all NYC eating places are loud & crowded and the weather will be lovely.

What do you guys think?

Between how intense the sun can get in the summer and how my joints aren't what they were, I'd need at least a bench to sit on and some shade to sit in. I don't buy groceries in Manhattan so I'm not personally familiar with the stores, though there are Fairways in Queens. *g*

Good points. What part of the city do you think we might go to? Do you have any preferences?

Googling for "quiet eatery in NYC" got me this Turkish restaurant, btw -- but from several years ago.

I should be able to get in on Saturday! If we could meet up to eat & play, where would you, the local, suggest?

I should add: I'll be coming in from NJ with easiest access to Penn Station (midtown), but I am very familiar with the city and can get anywhere necessary by public transport.

The problem with NYC is that places open and close all the time! *g* My go-to for food is Veselka in the East Village, though a lot of the other stuff I used to take people to there no longer exist. (Though I haven't visited Forbidden Planet in its new, slightly more southern location yet....) I'll be discussing it with Juls too.

Some things in Manhattan aren't open or aren't open for long on weekend days, so I'll probably look online in advance if I know what we're doing.

Also, very cool that you can do the mass transit thing, because some people I've shown around were rather "..." about it. *g*

[personal profile] seanchai and I both live in Brooklyn (with immediate access to the 2/3 and 4/5 subway lines), so if you and grey_bard would like to meet up with us at any point, we'd be available.

ETA: And sadly, it looks like you'll be missing the Brooklyn Mermaid Parade by less than a week. Darn. I was going to sugest that as a cool thing to go to.

I think seanchai and I may be going to see Joss Whedon's Shakespeare movie this weekend with grey_bard - would you be interested in coming as well? I think atm the plan is to go see it either Friday night or on Saturday.

If it will be on Saturday, I want to play, too!
