more music notes

Love you all for your suggestions on the rock songs about rock, still building the playlist for the Rock Star AU, IT IS RIDICULOUS and makes me so happy. I am now looking for a few more specific subjects:

--rock songs about rocky relationships with one's father
--rock songs about water or drowning (temporary placeholder here is Octopus's Garden but it seems thematically inappropriate)
--fave version of House of the Rising Sun, preferably female vocalist, preferably live--actually going for live on all, but youtube is surprisingly accommodating about this
--rock songs about the act of writing love songs, ala Elton John's Your Song but um maybe less relentlessly sappy?

Additionally, collecting Billys of music history. List currently includes Billie Holiday, Billy Idol, Billy Joel, Billy Preston, and cough Bill S. Preston, esq.

Any and all suggestions welcome! Thank you.

"Black River Killer" by Blitzen Trapper is probably not the kind of song you're looking for for water, but it immediately came to mind...

Melissa Etheridge is sometimes considered to be a rocker; her "Bring Me Some Water" immediately popped in my head.

Do they have to be good songs and rockers? Because I can dig out a few that might fit. But if they don't have to be great, then another Billy is Billy Joel Armstrong (Green Day,) and Good Charlotte did a couple of songs about fathers. Emotionless springs to mind. The Story of my Old Man might fit as well.

1. Is "A Boy Named Sue" too country? What about "Cat's in the Cradle"? Would you consider "Papa Don't Preach" rock, or is it too pop? [personal profile] squiggy1108 suggests "Janey's Got a Gun."

2. Doobie Brothers, "Black Water"

4. Don't forget Billy Ocean. Or Billy Jean. ;)

"When Water Comes to Life" (Cloud Cult)
"Stone on the Water" (Badly Drawn Boy)

4. Billy Joe Royal? ("Down in the Boondocks")

rock songs about rocky relationships with one's father

I'm not suggesting it, I'm not suggesting it: NICKELBACK. "Never Again", "Too Bad", can't remember if there's anything else relevant on Silver Side Up.

I'm not suggesting, not at all. Really. Nope. :D

Water: Flood, by Jars of Clay. One can ignore the Christian themes. Goodness knows I do.

Father of Mine by Everclear, Numb by Linkin Park (which doesn't say father, but Chester has said is indeed about dad being less than thrilled with his life choices)
Jars has several other songs about drowning. it's thing with them.
Sara Bareilles, Love Song (the one with the chorus 'I'm not gonna write you a love song')

Oh, and Linkin Park's Little Things Give You Away, which is about Katrina, so floods and drowning.

"Aenima" by Tool, about LA being swallowe by the sea? May be a bit heavy-metal, but the chorus does repeat 'Learn to swim'.

For water or drowning, The Great Below by Nine Inch Nails comes to mind, if industrial rock is acceptable.
