Utena is one of my all time favourite anime series ever. I could not stop GRINNING for days after the end of the series (Anthy walked out of the academy in search of Utena). Just gods, it was everything I wanted in a fairytale, and all the characters were so fabulous (cyphers and so much more). It was the series that made my then-boyfriend (now husband) have thought that maybe I was a lesbian. I had to explain that no, I fall for the person, not the sex.
But wow, to have this as your introduction to anime. Wow.
Have you seen the Utena movie? I know some really disliked it, but I adored it to tiny bits. It was so beautiful, and just, it was my kind of crack.
I did see the Utena movie! What's terrible is that we watched the movie before we watched the series (a decade ago, the first time I watched it). It made, um, more sense after we'd seen the series?
Oh wow. That would have completely thrown me. I saw the series before I saw the movie back... oh wow, back in '97 so that was 14 years ago, and then saw the movie about 3 to 4 months after its release.
I love the series, but I swear I'm probably still missing about 30% of the references (at the very least).
