Someone should definitely have known better

Dear John Scalzi and Wil Wheaton:

Perhaps if you didn't want people to write slash about you, you should not have named your RPF contest Wil Wheaton/John Scalzi Fan Fiction Contest to Benefit the Lupus Alliance of America. People might get the wrong idea. What with you putting a slash between your names, as is the convention in representing pairings in slash fiction. You... you did know there's a link between the typographic symbol and the fanfiction genre, right? Right, guys?

Um. Regards,
Juls

Didn't Wil Wheaton promote Fanlib? Talk about School of Should Have Known Better.

With Scalzi, I get the feeling that he wants to do the fandom thing but keeps on not quite getting it.

Also, as the comments point out, picking slash as the one thing they ban is rather unwise, given the amount of scope it leaves people.

But...but...the bright, shiny point on the tip of that spear...? I know a visual cue when I meet one.

Someone brought this up in irc, and my first reactions were

[17:40] <ysobel> "Any form of fan fiction is acceptable except slash" ... but if I make the unicorn pegasus kitten a girl (and the orcthing a boy), that would be an okay pairing? >_>
[17:44] <ysobel> also, given that admonition and the existance of a) a long hard thrustable spear, and b) hot magma spurting out of giant erect things... ... ... ...

I just looked at the page and there's been a new update:
Update, 6/1, 9:28am: There’s been some discussion in the comments about the “no slash” request, so let me clarify: “slash” in this case is meant to refer to explicit sex depictions, not the general possibilities of m/m-liciousness. Slashy non-explicit stories? Go nuts. Sorry for any confusion. Also, to be super-clear, no explicit sex of any kind, please.
