New toy

Bought a netbook, named her Free Bit. Typing on her now. I can tell it's going to be the punctuation that does me in here, I keep hitting the slash when I am for the period/ (case in point). I guess I'll train myself eventually. I can find the backspace intuitively which is better than pretty much every other netbook keyboard I tried.

Anyway, this is the first time I have actually owned a windows system, ever, so: any recs for AIM and IRC clients? Trying to think what else I want--have already downloaded Firefox, need to get some add-ons for it, setting up AVG now, I figure I'll head to openoffice for my doc needs, and other than that, I can't think what else I'll be using little baby Bit for.

Got rear-ended in the parking lot of the electronics store, because pick-up truck drivers are asshats who can't see behind them and ignore honking horns. So I have a ding in my bumper. I have the strangest feeling it wouldn't have happened if I weren't a universe sideways from Loki right now, and I find myself feeling a little naked without his protection.

I use Pidgin as my AIM client these days. Actual AIM just came to annoy me too much. Pidgin works pretty great and is FREE which is always a plus.

Ah, crap. Hope you got the insurance crapola worked out in regards to the car.

Also: the kidz miss you greatly. And ignore the PVC pipe on the back table when you do get back- I've got a side project I'm working on.

I use Trillian. It works with AIM, IRC, Yahoo, MSN, Gmail, Twitter...

I used to use Pidgin or Trillian, when I did IM. One thing you might want to try is Meebo, which is web-based and multi-protocol and might be easier on a netbook's limited RAM/hd space.

I'm trying to formulate some kind of smartass comment about you subconsciously *chosing* to type / instead of ., due to your fic propensities, but I can't think of a smooth or elegant way to say it. So, instead, I'm saying it like this.

I've always been happy with Trillian. It's free and handles every client I've run into out there.

I like to recommend the Firefox add-on, Morning Coffee. It opens all the tabs I like to look at at the same time, every time you start your browser.

how is this different from setting multiple homepages? That is what I do now.

At the moment I use Chatzilla, a Firefox plug-in, for IRC.

If this is a non-rhetorical question, I am not the one who can answer it. If it is rhetorical, never mind. *g*

Not a rhetorical question. But it looks like I could schedule Morning Coffee to give me different sites on a Friday than on other days of the week (for example), so it's more versatile than just multiple home pages.

Oh! That's more than I knew. Sorry I couldn't help, but I'm not familiar with the method of having multiple home pages.

open only the pages you want.

click Tools.
click options
in the general tab, in the "startup" section, select "Use current pages".
click "ok".

next time ffox starts, those pages will come up.
