query on the edibleness of food

So I'm cleaning out dead things from the fridge and have discovered my onions sprouted. Clearly, they are not dead, yet nor are they in the grocery-approved form I purchased them in. Safe to use?

Sure! The taste may suffer a bit but they're not dangerous to eat.

I have a green onion that I've had for several years. I harvest the green bit occasionally. The bulb part is pretty large...
