daily writing (who)

750 words post-"The Doctor Dances."

A couple of people on my flist were talking about the "aliens made them do it" cliché, and things got out of hand.

Jack ambushed the Doctor while they were dancing to "Twilight Time," which was not exactly period, but they weren't exactly in 1941 (or anywhen else) at the moment, so that was all right. Jack dipped him on "Deepening shadows gather splendor," drew him up slowly on "as day is done," and kissed him halfway through the line about "fingers of night" that the Doctor didn't hear the rest of.

Rose gave a startled laugh, which the Doctor guessed was not so much in pleasure as in "that had better be a joke."

The Doctor stepped back from Jack apologetically. "I'm afraid," he said gravely, "that that had better wait."

Jack gave him a bemused smile, his hand still on the Doctor's waist. "What's the matter?" he asked.

"In all fairness, I really should have kissed Rose first," the Doctor said. "She's been with me longer." He slipped away from Jack. He stepped up to Rose, put his hand by hers on the railing, and leaned in to kiss her.

Rose looked very startled indeed after he drew back. She said in a slightly shaky voice, "And that's just because it's fair, is it?"

"No, it's because I wanted to," the Doctor said reasonably. "Fair'd be if I told you you had to kiss the captain now, so we'd all be on even footing."

Jack raised his hand. "I vote for fair. Fair's good."

Rose glanced at Jack, biting her lip on one side of her mouth and grinning half a grin on the other side. She looked up at the Doctor, her expression becoming more serious. "And you'd be... okay with that."

"Of course," said the Doctor, even though he knew it wasn't an "of course" to Rose. "I kissed him, didn't I?"

Rose stood up straight, which made the Doctor step back to give her space. She brushed close to him, then stepped past him and went up to Jack. "Hello," she said.

"Hello," said Jack.

"Hello," said Rose again, which made Jack's face break into a wide smile. No accounting for humans, thought the Doctor, watching curiously.

Rose took Jack's face in her hands, stood up on tip-toes, and gave him a nice, long kiss. Jack's arms settled around her waist, and he didn't let her step away when she was done kissing him. "Did you want to do that? Or was it just fair?" he asked her.

Rose blushed and admitted, "Well, it wasn't exactly a hardship."

The Doctor said cheerfully, "You realize that now, if you... dance with me, you'll have to dance with him, too."

Rose looked over her shoulder, grinning playfully. "But I've already danced with both of you," she teased gaily.

The Doctor pretended outrage. "You danced with him without me there? But I wanted to watch you."

Jack laughed.

Rose's cheeks were a steady pink now. "You did?" she asked, and it was a serious question.

"Yeah," said the Doctor. "You're both very pretty, you know," which they were, but which wasn't it at all.

Rose's breath caught, and Jack gave her a squeeze. "That's a very possessive boyfriend you've got," he told her, amused. "Can't let you out of his sight."

That seemed to be the right thing to say, and the Doctor could see why. It redefined what Rose had been confused at the ease of, into something with motivations she could follow. And it wasn't half-wrong; the Doctor had been jealous when she'd first introduced them, still a little bubbly from champagne and moonlight. She'd called him Mr. Spock, which the Doctor knew full well wasn't just a jab at technology--Spock was the man that didn't go into heat but every seven years.

And he did want her first. It wasn't a thing that completely made sense, because he wasn't tied to her binary concepts of relationships and sexuality, but the thought that had come, when he'd accepted Jack, was that it wouldn't be so bad to share if only he could have her first.

Rose, recovered from her worries, bantered, "Will that be before or after you've danced with him, then, Doctor?"

"I don't know; why don't you ask him which of us he'd like first?" the Doctor suggested.

Jack looked down at Rose, then over her head at the Doctor. "Decisions, decisions. Can't I just have you both at once?"

Rose blushed so hard at that that the Doctor snagged her away from Jack. "In a bit," he told Jack. To Rose, he said, "Care to tango?"

Ooooooooooh, that's a lovely variation of "aliens made them do it". I like. :)

*grins cheekily* I was going to call it "inappropriate 'aliens made them do it' fic," but I can't exactly think of an appropriate example. So I think I'm going with "unexpected 'aliens made them do it' fic."
