mmm, well, that gets complicated. I meant, originally, his reasoning for taking "Maes" as he could get him -- allowing that need to override what should seem like common sense. And yet, when you start looking at the subtext, there's that layer of the acknowledged (passive?) death wish, and the layer of keep your friends close and your enemies closer (because if he's fucking you at least you know where he is), and probably other layers that my hindbrain twigged on but I can't vocalize coherently at the moment. So maybe my remark was a little bit of shorthand. ^_~
