Walter has done so many awful things! Like, he didn't just experiment on children by giving them a drug of uncertain effects, he also applied emotional abuse to see if that helped! (And then it turns out he had parts of his brain removed to stop his monsterishness, and like, if we are the sum of our memories is he no longer that person since he doesn't remember all the things he did? Or?) But yeah, he's also so plot-necessary that like. For me, to watch the show all the way through, I couldn't deal with him as a monster all the time, I had to watch him as a jester for a lot of it.
