• main character experimented on as a child in a manner that made some major part of her adult life inevitable
  
• father/figure with morally questionable past estranged from child at start series; relationship grows throughout series
  
• mother/figure of dubious loyalties
  
• memory recovery via mad scientist heavy drug usage shenanigans
  
• fridged boyfriend (might be a double agent of some kind)
  
• treasure hunt quest for pieces of a technologically improbable device scattered around the globe in the distant past
  
• prophecy child
  
• mysterious alternate version of lead character
  
• mysterious alternate version of secondary character given cutsey nickname to alleviate the horror
  
• character replaced by alternate impersonating her for a godawful long segment of a season
  
• brainwashing people to think they are other people
  
• X-Files homages
  
• seasonal ensemble shake-up changes all the character relationship dynamics
  
• season break time jump when show has written self into a corner
