I too learned a lot of this from my mom, the idea of being able to reject the culture's obsessions with beauty if I wanted to, which I did.

I have short hair now and probably always will, but there is something about having my hair touched and braided that calls back to my mom brushing it and putting it into French braids that makes me feel very loved and cared for.
