I started this fic all, "What? Apocalypse Hornblower? What?" cognitive dissonance,

Heh, yeah, it does rather screw with you know, the history of the world.

Hornblower blaming himself for the fall of England.

His little emo tragedy, yes *pats him on the head* The horrible thing is he's not implausibly wrong. He was sort of a patient zero for cross-Atlantic spread.

And I love the way you slowly doled out the details of how this world is different from the Hornblower universe(s) we know,

Heh! Universes indeed. Did you catch bits of book, then? I swear, I have the most patchwork canon for this fandom; half movie, half books, half the historical Pellew's dispatches. But the tale of Bush and Hornblower's wild excesses in Kingston is one of my favorite bits of book canon.

especially how the Lieutenant Hornblower-era events diverge from canon.

*nods vigorously* You know, my biggest problem was who was going to be the scapegoat if Archie lived, and the thing that was maddening was how in the book there was no trial, they were determined to gloss over how mad Captain Sawyer had gone. But I felt like for movie fans I couldn't toss the trial out entirely--so I ended up pinning the thing on poor Wellard. (He probably died a zombi, bless his little heart.)
