Vid announcement: Industrial Strength Tranquilizer

Vid: Industrial Strength Tranquilizer--24.1MB avi, link updated 11 March 2019
Fandom: Eureka
Music: Austin Lounge Lizards
Vidder: [livejournal.com profile] jmtorres
Dedication: A wedding present for [livejournal.com profile] niqaeli
Premiered at: [livejournal.com profile] vidukon '08
Summary: This town could drive a man to drink.

This was the vid known as Blue Harvest while in progress, in a vain, vain attempt to keep its existence secret from its intended recipient. (I have been assigning code names of various logics to various vids to keep them secret from various people, with varying degrees of success. The logic behind Blue Harvest is that the last wedding present vid I made was a Star Wars vid.)

So in theory I was not telling [livejournal.com profile] niqaeli about this vid until I handed her the DVD along with her mini-cheesecake tins (you know: housewares, traditional wedding present).

In practice vid farr took me to her guest bedroom, where she saw the last couple of drafts as I finished up a verse and a couple of choruses.

I think I should just transcribe the vid farr notes here:

11 September 2008, 11:16pm.

So I'm vidding again. Blue Harvest is supposed to be a surprise present for someone who won't be very surprised but hopefully will be totally presentable.

When I clip for vids, all my clip title names are extremely dorky and sometimes referential. So far I have a number of "[so-and-so] exposits" (it's always the same so-and-so! go figure), some "unexpected naked Jack" (hilariously, unexpected naked Jack is so very no longer unexpected that the word "unexpected" is not part of the tag, although it is for other actors such as Tennant and Pertwee), a great deal of "[x] [y] is [x]," and a law enforcement outheld hand of calming entitled "don't drink, don't smoke."

(When we were working on Highway Café, there was a clip entitled "contemplate career as a gigolo." It is entirely possible my memory is longer and more twisted than is wise.)

How do other people get through the insanely tedious process of clipping?

My question of etiquette is resolved. Blue Harvest will premiere at [livejournal.com profile] vidukon, neatly solving my timeline issues.

Ahahahah. Oh dear. Right. At the time my question of etiquette was "How long do I give the bride after the wedding before releasing the vid online?" under the assumptions that 1. she would be too busy having a honeymoon to look at her presents immediately and 2. I wouldn't totally fail at secrecy and bring my computer to her house. [livejournal.com profile] vidukon worked out fairly well, actually, it was the weekend after the wedding, but the deadline for premiering vids was a few weeks before the wedding, so I was motivated to get the damn thing done in advance and therefore be less of a vidding machine and more a human being at the time of the wedding. (Plus it left me some padding if I didn't get it done by the premiere deadline. But I did. Because I'm awesome.)

So I'm contemplating what to write for NaNoWriMo, which may be entirely premature. Some years, what I decide two weeks before is entirely premature. Doing this now is, I admit, partially to tell bunnies to wait their turn. I have other things with sooner deadlines. I can at some later time reread Stitch in Time, Petshop of Horrors, etc.

...

(Oh, hey, rewatch reminds me, I need to schedule my Blue Harvest working time. I think I need to be clipping 3-4 episodes a day to make my deadline. Arrrrgh.)

Ahahahah. Ahem. I clipped about 30 of the episodes in a day, instead of doing them on said leisurely schedule. How, do you ask, did I clip 30 tv-hour episodes in a day? And when did I sleep? I asked Loki for a time warp.

So I gave in and opened a DS9 torrent.

I am not remotely on schedule here.

Why does this complaint sound familiar?

Quark: I can't believe it. Julian just shot Vic Fontaine!
Rom: I thought Vic was his favorite singer! No wonder they call it the alternate universe.

Let vid farr commence.

This was Friday of the last weekend before my Monday deadline. Hilarious sidenote, the [livejournal.com profile] vidukon premieres deadline moved like three time, eventually to a week later. Were I a lesser layabout, I would have turned in an extra three tweaked versions. In vidding, and likewise in pro editing, the general rule is that you tweak right up until deadline, and then a little bit after. Parkinson's Law in action. But somehow I actually managed to let the thing go. Perhaps from sheer exhaustion?

That Friday I hauled my computer over to [livejournal.com profile] echan's. Because apparently vid farr occurs best in places other than home.

Logging is totally the most boring part of vidding.

Am currently somewhere between a quarter and a third logged. 10/34? Yay me.

Worth noting I'd been up a good three hours and had breakfast at Denny's by that point. No rest for the wicked. Seven in the morning on a Saturday, I ask you!

-----

4 October 2008, 10:27pm.

Horrifyingly, I think I could make a Jack/Allison/Stark vid if I wanted to. Like, I know it's supposed to play as a triangle? But with no sound it could totally be a threesome with an asshole, and guess who's such an asshole that it's hard to tell when he's stoned because his personality doesn't lose a jot of condescension?

I may yet do it--not a full length vid, maybe a minute-long minivid like Rain. I'm not sure I could stand to do a whole song. The idea of them makes me twitchy. [livejournal.com profile] niqaeli and I, being poly and enjoying poly fic, tend to feel that threesome is the answer to most love triangles. Jack/Allison/Stark is, she says, the exception that proves the rule.

5 October 2008, 10:02 am.

So I forget if I mentioned? I got some cider last night hoping it would ease the pain of logging. Didn't improve my efficiency any but did make it slightly less tedious.

I've been up logging for an hour this morning and there was a certain amount of "surely it's too early to drink" but... fucking logging. Fuck it. Come to me, my tasty cider.

I had breakfast first? I mean, it was cookies, but oh well. I already knew this vid was being produced entirely by chocolate.

Current logging status: 88%. 30/34 episodes done.

[livejournal.com profile] echan had at this point abandoned me to go do yardwork for [livejournal.com profile] traykor at casa del [livejournal.com profile] niqaeli et al. Else I might not have had to resort to booze. Before then I'd been rewarding myself with a quick snuggle with [livejournal.com profile] echan for every 5 odd episodes clipped.

5 October 2008, 4:01pm.

0:52 seconds in, one verse and one chorus. Sending preview to vidshow mod I'm turning it into sometime in the next twelve hours and performing a site change to ConHQ, where my built-in beta has gone.

Yay convenient breaks?

5 October 2008, 9:12pm.

So I'm at the bridge. You know how I hate vidding bridges?

Someone sent me their vid to critique just as I had been staring at the bridge for like, fifteen minutes.

I am now vidding their vid instead of my vid. Like, not just offering suggestions, not even very detailed suggestions--no, I downloaded an episode of something, cut a trick shot in Final Cut, and sent it to them.

MY LEVELS OF AVOIDANCE ARE UNACCEPTABLY HIGH.

[livejournal.com profile] niqaeli and [livejournal.com profile] echan and [livejournal.com profile] traykor kept asking me who else's vid I was working on now for the next two days. Well after I actually finished the vid I was supposed to be working on.

-----

6 October 2008, 2:11am.

Mmm, better cider.

Finished first draft. Uploading first draft to show online beta as in-person ones are asleep. It is taking forever. I broke out [livejournal.com profile] echan's notes on the first two verses and have had a go at a second draft. Now am reading DS9 badfic and waiting for upload to finish omg.

6 October 2008, 8:06am.

Hey, who can help me out with a vid beta right now?

Bizarrely, I actually slept between making those two posts. Ha.

And the rest of the vid farr notes are all how coming off it is like having the bends. And yet, I'm considering doing it again to get a yule season present out. Why, why, why?

About the vid itself: This town could drive a man to drink.

I would feel guiltier about giving [livejournal.com profile] niqaeli the Booze Vid for a wedding present except that, you know, the party favors at the reception were shot glasses engraved with the ethanol molecule. But oh. This vid has been in the back of my head since season 1 of Eureka--tranqulizer darts left and right, beer on tap in SARAH's fridge, Jack getting knocked on his ass every week, and beerflakes. This vid could honestly have been a lot boozier than it was: I had enough cocktail footage to fill all the "shot of old crow" lines in the choruses, but I went for the "Jack gets shot in the face every week" instead because, well, this is not only a vid about how Jack drinks, it's a vid about why he drinks. If it's not being knocked out by his deputy, it's being covered in human goo.

This vid is a shallow vid, by the way. Jack's life is hard in hilariously wacky ways: Jack drinks to dull the absurdity. There is (practically) no subtext here.

Although if there are any shots that make you wonder what they're doing there and for so long (two, in particular, rather linger, I was told in beta), please know that they're there for [livejournal.com profile] niqaeli, who squeebled like a mad thing as Jack and Henry, in her words, cuddled in the dirt.

P.S. I have updated my list of vids with imeem and divx avi files for all. Let me know if y'all have any problems downloading or viewing anything, mmmkay?

*goes to watch the Eureka one*

*giggles a lot while watching*
*loves the perfect synchronity of Carter drinking beer and the lyrics line 'and a glass of Budweiser*
*loves the amount of Jack/Henry scenes in the vid*

This was fun!

Eureka. So much booze. So many disasters. *G*

Excellent job on your vid! I think the song chosen works very well with the fandom, the clips match up to the vocals well, there is slashy content (but doesn't hit me over the head with it, which I appreciate), and moves very well with the pacing of the music. And you've made me miss watching Eureka regularly. I love it!

Just saw this. Loved it. Would give more detailed (and gushing feedback), but I am about to pass out myself.

I love this vid! I have watched it multiple times since downloading it and it still makes me laugh. And I showed it to someone else and they said 'What is that show? It seems fun, I should watch it'.
